SLS | Selective Laser Sintering | 3D Printing

SLS | Selective Laser Sintering

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is a 3D printing process that uses a high-powered laser to fuse powdered materials layer by layer, producing strong, durable, and complex parts without the need for support structures.

Laser Sintered (LS) rapid prototypes are ideal when you need tough parts for harsh functional testing. SICAM produces our laser-sintered parts from pure nylon powder for high-strength, pressure-proof, chemical, and heat-resistant applications. Adding a percentage of glass fill can increase rigidity and resilience of parts in harsh heat environments.

Applications

Rapid Prototyping

SLS printing is ideal for creating durable prototypes that can undergo functional testing, particularly for parts requiring high strength and temperature resistance.

Metal Casting Patterns

SLS printing enables precise, complex molds for metal casting, offering faster production, customization, and cost savings.

Auto/Aerospace

Components

SLS is valued in automotive and aerospace for creating lightweight, complex parts like ducting, housings, and intricate geometries unattainable with traditional methods.

SLS FAQs

What type of parts are best for SLS?
SLS is ideal for parts with complex geometries and applications requiring function that is more important than surface finish.
Is SLS only for making prototypes?
Not exactly. Depending on the application, SLS parts can even be used as production parts.
What's the difference between SLS and SLA?
Both are additive manufacturing process that utilize a laser to trace out and build a model. SLS parts are made from a cured powder resin whereas SLA parts are a cured liquid resin. SLS parts are generally more durable compared to SLA parts, however the SLA process can usually produce more accurate parts. SLS parts also require less engineering time as they have no issues with supports, while SLA parts need to be designed or prepped with proper supports.
What layer thickness can SLS produce?

SLS can grow at layer thicknesses between 0.004" and 0.006" with a resolution between 0.030" and 0.050" in the XY plane. Wall thickness of 0.040" is the recommended minimum. What tolerances can be held by SLS? ± 0.3%, lower limit of ± 0.3 mm (0.012 in) .
