Selecting SLS

Laser Sintered (LS) rapid prototypes are ideal when you need tough parts for harsh functional testing. SICAM produces our laser sintered parts from pure nylon powder for high strength, pressure proof, chemical and heat resistant applications. Adding a percentage of glass fill can increase rigidity and resilience to parts in harsh heat environments.

Benefits:
  • Functional parts
  • Large Parts
  • Chemical & heat resistant
  • Snap fit and living hinges
  • Low-volume production
Applications:
  • Product Performance Testing
  • Jigs and Fixtures
  • Metal casting patterns
  • Architectural models
  • Fuel tanks
  • Assembly fixtures

The Laser Sintering Process (SLS)

Plastic laser sintering (SLS) is an additive manufacturing technique that uses a high power laser (for example, a carbon dioxide laser) to fuse small particles of plastic, metal (direct metal laser sintering), ceramic, or glass powders into a mass that has a desired 3-dimensional shape. The laser selectively fuses powdered material by scanning cross-sections generated from a 3-D digital description of the part (for example from a CAD file or scan data) on the surface of a powder bed. After each cross-section is scanned, the powder bed is lowered by one layer thickness, a new layer of material is applied on top, and the process is repeated until the part is completed.

Types of SLS Parts

Basic
Parts that are per the process.. This type of part can be used for fit and function as a prototype and low volume production.
Custom
Custom parts include secondary operations.  These can include painting, plating, decorating, texturing, and threaded inserts. Call to discuss with an application engineer.
